Measuring voltage and current

Objectives:

  • Know how to connect an ammeter into a circuit to measure electric current.
  • Know how to connect a voltmeter into a circuit to measure voltage.
  • Be able to build a simple circuit and measure voltage and current.

Task 1 - Starter

Draw as many circuit symbols as you can remember in the back of your books.  You have 2 minutes!  When you have finished your teacher will ask some of you to come and draw your symbols on the board.

Task 2

Now put the title "Measuring Voltage and Current" in your books and stick in the sheet of circuit symbols you have been given.

Use the circuit symbols to complete the circuit diagram below.  Make A an ammeter, B a bulb and C a voltmeter. Label the cell.

Task 3

Watch carefully as your teacher demonstrates how to connect a voltmeter and ammeter to measure the voltage across a component and the current in the circuit.

Now, follow the instructions on this sheet to build the circuits shown.  Answer the questions at the bottom of the page in full sentences.

Task 4

Your teacher will give you a sheet "Measuring Current and Voltage" (11_ELEC1/3)

• Fill in the missing words in the sentences at the top

• Add the meters to to the circuit diagrams to measure voltage and current for each of the circuits
