Energy and Efficiency - Overview

This module covers work on energy changes, efficiency and power.  The work extends to cover ideas about domestic use of electrical energy and calculating the cost of energy used in this context.  Details of the content and teaching order can be seen below.

Lesson Learning Outcomes Notes Book ref. Specification ref.
1 - Energy Transfers
  • Know that energy can be changed from one form into another.
  • Be able to draw energy transfer diagrams to show these changes.
Key terms: P1.12 P1.2.1
2 - Efficiency
  • Know that some of the energy used by a device is wasted.
  • Be able to draw Sankey diagrams to show the amounts of useful and wasted energy produced by a device.
  • Be able to calculate the efficiency of a device, given information about the energy input and useful energy output.

  P1.13

P1.2.1
3 - Efficiency II
  • Know that a lightbulb converts electrical energy into light energy and heat energy.
  • Carry out a practical task to measure the electrical energy supplied to the bulb and the heat energy produced.
  • Use the data collected to calculate the light energy produced and hence the efficiency.
