Unit 1





Explores ideas about types of energy, energy transfers, motion and units of measurement.  Pupils also gain practice solving numerical problems and carrying out calculations.



Unit 2




Explores ideas about longitudinal and transverse waves, light, colour mixing and filtering, reflection, refraction, and sound & hearing.




Unit 3




Explores ideas about permanent magnets, electromagnets, domain theory, voltage, current, and resistance.  Develops skills in building electrical circuits and drawing/interpreting circuit diagrams.



Unit 4




Explores ideas about types of force, measuring forces, balanced and unbalanced forces, resultant forces, and how forces affect motion.  Also covers pressure, levers & moments.

Explores ideas about heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation.  This module is still being written and resourced.  Check again later.



Unit 6




Objects in our solar system and beyond, including planets in our solar system, orbital dynamics of planets / comets / asteroids.  Explores ideas about mass and weight, different types of star and more.

The Key Stage 3 course covers a wide range of concepts; topics include energy, speed, waves, electricity, magnetism, forces, pressure, moments, heat transfer and space.  You will find starter tasks, simulations, animations, embedded videos, worksheets, images, presentations and more on the lesson pages.


The course is designed to be taught over two years, at a rate of three modules per year.  Schools with a longer Key Stage 3 phase may wish to teach the course at a rate of two modules per year.
