Building Circuits

Objectives:

Arcing :)

• Be able to draw and recognise common circuit symbols.

• Be able to construct circuit diagrams for simple circuits.

• Be able to use circuit diagrams to build circuits.

Task 1 - Starter

Find someone who knows:

1) What are the two types of charge?

2) Which one is small and light?

3) What is voltage?

4) What is current?

5) What is resistance?

6) What is the difference between static electricity and current electricity?

Your teacher will ask you to share your ideas with the class, and may write some of your ideas, suggestions, and comments on the board.

Task 2 - Building circuits

Hands up!

Your teacher will ask for a volunteer to build a simple circuit - containing 2 cells, 2 bulbs, and a switch.

Try to use your sheet of circuit symbols to draw a circuit diagram, showing how the components are connected together.

Challenge

Hands up!

Build each of the circuits on this worksheet.

click here to download the worksheet.

Some circuits include ammeters to measure the current flowing.

Write down the measurement from each ammeter on your sheet.

Task 3 - Circuit diagrams

Stationery.

Great for diagrams.

Draw circuit diagrams for each of the following circuits:

a) two cells, a resistor, an ammeter and a switch.

b) two cells, two resistors, an ammeter and a switch.

c) two cells, a motor, a bulb, an ammeter and a switch.

d) two cells, a motor, an LED, an ammeter and a switch.

Task 4 - More complex circuit diagrams

Electricity arcing.

Two-way switches can be used:

• to switch between two components.

• at the top and bottom of a staircase, to control the same light

Your teacher will show you both kinds of circuit.  Draw circuit diagrams for these circuits.  Think carefully about these - they are a little more complex!

Homework

A simple circuit.

Your teacher will give you a worksheet.

Draw the circuit diagram for each circuit neatly, using a pencil and ruler.

Label your diagram to show the name of each component.

I haven't written a digital resource for this homework task yet.

I will add one, at some point!
